Artist Statement
Art, for me, is not something that turns off. It’s a constant obsession, a discipline, and a way of understanding the world. I work under the name StewMask, a practice rooted in storytelling, precision, and the belief that creativity lives in everyone, waiting to be unlocked.
My work is driven by the idea that a goalie mask is more than equipment—it’s identity, confidence, and narrative. Every surface is an opportunity to tell a story. I obsess over detail, symbolism, and flow, spending countless hours refining concepts, layering meaning, and pushing designs beyond what they were originally meant to be. Each mask becomes a personal artifact, built through trust, collaboration, and relentless craftsmanship.
Alongside my studio practice, I am deeply invested in education. Teaching art at the high school level has reinforced my belief that creativity is not a rare talent, but a skill that can be cultivated with the right environment, encouragement, and challenge. Whether I’m guiding students or painting masks, my goal is the same: to extract creative potential and turn it into something tangible, meaningful, and powerful.
StewMask is not just a brand—it’s my life’s work in progress, shaped by hockey culture, fine art discipline, and an unwavering drive to create at the highest level.
About the Artist
StewMask is the creative practice of Brendan Stewart, a Lethbridge, Alberta–based artist specializing in custom goalie mask design and paintwork. At 23 years old, Brendan is a full-time artist and a final-year education student at the University of Lethbridge, where he has spent the past two semesters teaching high school art and fostering creativity in young artists.
Over the last four years, Brendan has established himself as a dedicated commissioned artist, completing 70+ fully painted goalie masks and 50+ vinyl deckle mask designs for goaltenders at a wide range of competitive levels. His work is known for its attention to detail, layered storytelling, and deep respect for the culture and tradition of the position.
Goalie masks are more than a medium—they are a lifelong obsession. Brendan spends every day sketching, refining concepts, studying materials, and pushing his technical and artistic limits. Brendan has mentored under elite artists, JBOAirbrush and Hyrum Moriyama in 2025. His long-term goals include reaching Olympic-level and NHL-level mask work, and every project is approached with that standard in mind.
As both an artist and educator, Brendan believes creativity is not exclusive—it’s something that can be developed, trained, and drawn out with intention. This philosophy shapes both his teaching practice and his studio work, resulting in designs that are bold, personal, and purpose-driven.
StewMask represents the intersection of passion, precision, and relentless creative pursuit—built by an artist who lives and breathes his craft.
